I hold a Ph.D. in Political Science from Miami University. I have had broad professional experience as a teacher, foreign policy profiler, manager, leader at the executive level of the Federal Government, management consultant, public speaker and author. My early work experience included stints as an Army Medical Services Corps Officer in Germany and Vietnam, and an Assistant Professorship in the Political Science Department at Denison University in Ohio. My distinguished career with the Central Intelligence Agency included senior assignments as Director of Leadership Analysis in the Directorate of Intelligence, Deputy Inspector General, and Director Human Resource Management. I am now the President and CEO of my own consulting practice and a frequent Moderator for various Braver Angels' Workshops.
Terry's dynamic, interactive Management Workshop entitled “What the Best Managers Know and Do” © has helped hundreds of managers come to grips with the challenges of their demanding jobs. His perspective on managing and leading is provocative, frank, and motivational. He consistently challenges his audiences to abandon their pre-conceptions and comfort zones. He urges them to take personal responsibility for achieving the goals. changes and excellence they seek. Terry is an insight weaver whose goal is to make you think.
Terry's books and numerous blog articles are likewise thought provoking. They contain his experienced-based, substantive insights on a broad variety of every day management and leadership issues and challenges.
When I read, or hear my own resume recited as an introduction to one of my presentations or facilitations, I always feel that it misses much of the real me. Yes I believe I am an insight weaver; My strength is an ability to integrate and synthesize personal, professional, and organizational experiences into a coherent, textured, understandable and actionable vision. I specialize in finding the common patterns in disparate things, or the common ground in what may seem insurmountable differences.
I am invariably optimistic, passionately believe in respect for others, and think that human beings are incredibly complex, smart, unpredictable, and potential-laden. Acknowledge and give free range to that potential, individually or collectively, and just watch what can be accomplished.
If I have a life's philosophy, it's encapsulated in those things I value. I admire integrity, honesty, trust, authenticity, respect and the optimistic spirit of “can do”. I abhor cynicism for its own sake, negativity, phonies, rear-view thinking, legends in their own mind, and the phrases “we don’t do it that way here” and “that can’t be done”. I like to play, jealously guard the six year old in me, and enjoy occasionally being just a little out of sync; the better to see things differently. Asked to choose between black and white, I want to talk about gray. Laughter is an elixir and I’m always attuned to the humorous in life, especially in my own screw ups and foolishness. I fell in love with the Socratic method at age 20 and have been striving ever since to master the art of asking meaningful questions. I don’t even pretend to have all the answers. While I relish feedback that I have inspired or motivated, I most value a simple “you made me think”.
